The award-winning works on the theme of “HOW TO LIVE” for the KOKUYO DESIGN AWARD 2016 have been decided
KOKUYO Co., Ltd. (Head office: Osaka City; President and CEO: Hidekuni Kuroda) would like to announce that, according to the results of the selection panel on 30th November, 5 award-winning works for the KOKUYO DESIGN AWARD 2016 have been decided. These works were selected from the total number of 1307 works submitted (artwork submission period: 13th May to 29th July) from Japan and overseas (929 submissions from Japan and 378 from overseas). This competition aims to commercialize excellent product designs from the point of view of the user, from works submitted by a wide range of users.
This year marks the 14th year since the start of the KOKUYO DESIGN AWARD in 2002 (the competition was not held in 2010) and has been held from the start with the aim of further strengthening the making of products from the point of view of the customer.
Currently, the KOKUYO Group is promoting the provision of values that contribute to improving creativity in the “working”, “learning” and “living” aspects of customers’ lives through products and services.
This time we made a broad interpretation of the scenes in “working”, “learning” and “living” and set the theme for submissions as “HOW TO LIVE”. We invited submissions of proposals for “product designs that lead to an awareness in the user of a way of life or living” through “items around us in our daily life, such as stationery, furniture or daily necessities”.
The winning works for this year’s Grand Prix and for each award are as follows:
The award-winning works
Grand Prix (1 work)
Design name | Generic name | Design overview | Award winner/Group name |
---|---|---|---|
Raw Stationery | Pencils, rulers, erasers | The rod-shapes are stationery as materials. I wanted to bring out the original simplicity of stationery tools, like drawing a pattern on the ground with a branch, and the one-on-one relationship that develops by adding your own personal touch. | AATISMO (Daiki Nakamori / Keita Ebidzuka) |
Award for Excellence (three designs)
Design name | Generic name | Design overview | Award winner/Group name |
---|---|---|---|
Product Anniversary | Rubber stamp | Things you often use. Things you hardly use. Things that you have been using all the time. Things that you threw away immediately. Things that you feel attached to. Things that you don't feel any attachment to. A stamp that suggests a new way of doing things and rethinking the relationship between you and your personal belongings. | Yasunari Abe |
Manga packing tape | Packing tape | Packing tape printed with cartoon frames, speech balloons and special-effect lines. By drawing the story behind the gift, or the thoughts of the sender, you can visually add feelings to the gift. | Kazuhiro Minami |
Fit tape cutter | Tape cutter | The tape cutter fits perfectly on your thumb and it feels as if you are cutting with your own hand. Having the blade on the top of the end of your nail gives a comfortable cut and the lightness felt by the integration of the cutter with the finger deepens the connection between the person and the tool. | Kujira (Nanae Ishikawa / Kohei Maeda) |
