Values and History

120 years of
forging our path

and the driving
force behind
KOKUYO

Our Founder
Zentaro Kuroda

Born in Toyama Prefecture in 1879. At the age of 26, he ventured out on his own in Osaka to open "Kuroda Hyoshiten" (Kuroda Ledger Cover Shop).

Our Founding Spirit
“We enrich the worldthrough our products.”

In other words,
our aim is to offer solutions.

“When creating, imagine you are the customer.”

We pursue the true
essence of craftsmanship.

“Failure is a steppingstone to success.”

We embrace challenge
without fear of failure.

The Founding Era

The unchanging spirit of
KOKUYO: people are the heart of all we do.

It all began with a single ledger cover. Since our founding, the principle of co-creation with empathy has been our North Star, guiding our every decision, especially when facing our greatest challenges.

The Early Days

The product is not the
goal. We pursue the
experiences people truly want.

During the era of rapid economic growth, our furniture business was born from the voices of customers struggling with an overwhelming amount of paperwork. However, what they truly sought was not a "box," but a way to store and manage their information. This was the origin of our philosophy of designing experiences.

The Expansion Era

Experimenting and
expanding. Moving toward the creation of spaces
centered on people.

We expanded our focus from individual furniture pieces to the design of the spaces that surround them. We also introduced our groundbreaking Live Office initiative. There is a saying at KOKUYO: "Fail before our customers do." We have experiences, give them shape, fail, and try again. This perfectly embodies KOKUYO’s culture of experimentation.

The Present Day

Opening our doors to the city. Proposing “Work & Life” for every unique path.

We boldly renovated our own office building in Shinagawa to serve as a testing ground for KOKUYO’s "Work & Life" philosophy. THE CAMPUS is the culmination of our history in product creation, spatial design, and experience design. From here, we will continue to create the future.

User-Friendliness Through Quality Improvements and Sincerity

In our third year of business, we began manufacturing wacho account books ourselves. As writing instruments were shifting from brushes to pens, we used smooth, custom-made paper and committed to an exact 100-sheet count, setting us apart in a market where 96 or 98 sheets were common.

A Novel Approach: An Artwork Sheet Inserted in the Letter Pad
