Opening day saw over two hundred groups of shoppers and strong sales

KOKUYO Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka/President: Hidekuni Kuroda) announces that its Malaysian subsidiary, KOKUYO International (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., opened Southeast Asia's first "Campus STYLE the Starling" directly managed store for KOKUYO stationery on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The store is located in "the Starling" shopping mall in Petaling Jaya, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

As the value-added stationery market expands due to the heightening needs for self-expression through social media, KOKUYO's stationery business aims to capture the market by enhancing our points of contact with customers and expanding our business domains not only in Japan, but also globally. In particular, two directly managed stores opened recently in Shanghai in 2022 and 2024 in response to the growing enthusiasm toward studying among students in Asian countries affected by economic growth.

Since establishing a local subsidiary in Malaysia in 1997, KOKUYO's focus has been on furniture manufacturing and sales, and developing our office space proposal business. After our 2022 survey and two pop up shops in 2023, we made our formal debut in the stationery business with the opening of "Campus STYLE the Starling Store," our first shop in Southeast Asia. "Campus STYLE the Starling Store" is located in "the Starling," a shopping mall situated in Petaling Jaya in the outskirts of Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur. The mall, which sits among a mixture of modern office buildings, high-rise apartments, as well as traditional restaurants and shops, bustles with office workers on weekdays and local families and couples in evenings and on weekends.

Inside the shop, KOKUYO stationery was displayed along white walls, and on opening day, we welcomed our customers with approximately a thousand kinds of products.

1. Opening Day

The grand opening was on May 25, a Saturday, and the store was busy from past noon until closing at 10 p.m. with crowds of families and students. Customers explored the store each in their own way, with some students taking more than 30 minutes to carefully make a round, while parents and children stopped to test out writing utensils on a large roll of un-cut paper set up in the store sent directly from the Campus Note factory.

Over two hundred groups of people made purchases on the first day. The most popular items were illustrated notebooks. Many customers were female, and several were seen buying notebooks with cute illustrations of animals and other things. Some customers discovered KOKUYO through our past two pop up shops, and others found out about the opening of Campus STYLE through SNS* and were looking forward to it. Opening day was a confirmation of the recognition KOKUYO is gaining in Malaysia.
